In short, I'm trying to properly overclock my GTX 980. I'm a bit confused about the information I've gathered and read, especially regarding the +Mv, Power Limit %, and Over Limit settings on MSI Afterburner. With an 850W power supply, I think I have enough, but I'm worried whether my overclock is getting insufficient power or if it's using too much that's not being utilized. This could be causing crashes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! A link explaining these concepts would be helpful too. I notice the Over Limit setting on MSI Afterburner only shows 0 or 1, and sometimes it's 1 while other times it's 0. Is this really that important? Also, my GPU seems to cap at around 1.2500 volts, which is strange because in certain games or apps the MV doesn't activate properly. I've noticed the clock speed increases a bit when I enable it, and I can check the voltage, but some applications don't respond as expected. It's confusing—I'm not sure if this is what's causing the issues. Help would be really appreciated!
With a high-quality PSU, it would be enough to handle overclocking two of those cards.
There is no such thing as "extra power". Scenarios like "having plenty of power", "running out of power", "hitting a limit on power", or "not having enough power" are all unrealistic in computer power supply applications. They can only be achieved with overridden protection circuitry, a tailored load combination, and a specific PSU design that uses overrated MOSFETs to avoid burning.
I'm getting inconsistent responses, and the first two comments don't make much sense. The third one is a bit less clear than I expected. If I run defaults and just boost core voltage while testing the GPU render, adjusting the core voltage seems to add some MHz to the core clock. I'm wondering if this setup is intended to push performance at all costs, since if I only increase the core voltage, it doesn't always raise the MHz, which might mean it's not optimized for that. It's similar to what I've seen in a YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eqUZK6K5j4), where the voltage is raised to 1.2750, while my card reaches 1.2500 and its power limit is only at 100%. That seems a bit odd.
