Assist with BSOD occasionally
I just assembled my new PC CPU: ultra 9 285k, motherboard asus maximus extreme z890, cooler corsair h170i, and the GPU is corsair cudimm 2 sticks of 24gb at 8400 Psi. Everything functions well except for occasional blue screens and restarts. In Event Viewer it shows a critical kernel power event. I’ve updated the BIOS and refreshed all drivers. My PSU is protected by a surge protector rated for 1850W.
It smells like power instability. I recommend running a stress test on your PC using either CPU or GPU focused tests. Compare performance with the wall plug versus the surge protector. From what I understand, it's unlikely the power draw is stable enough for the system, so it may simply switch to another source when fluctuations occur. Just make sure all connections inside your PC are secure :p. Cheers!
Thank you! I need to know how long to run the test. I'm planning to use occt.
Begin with a 30-minute to one-hour session. If it runs smoothly without blue screens or instability, it’s a positive sign about power delivery. For a more detailed check, extend the testing time. Any crashes during the test are a strong warning of power issues, particularly if accompanied by voltage spikes.
Usually power problems don’t cause BSODs, they lead to shutdowns or freezes. BSODs are uncommon due to power issues but not impossible. Look in C:\Windows\Minidump for any minidump files. If found, return to Windows and move the Minidump folder to your Downloads folder (or use your desktop if needed). Compress the folder and send it via a post. Remember to follow instructions carefully since Windows doesn’t allow changes there.
I examined the most recent minidump and discovered the issue was linked to my 8400 m/t clock. I adjusted it down to 6400 m/t to test its stability for a day, then returned to 8000 m/t if everything functioned correctly.
