I worked with several boards featuring ddr1/2 slots and PCI-E/APG slots, and I can confirm what you said. These units performed poorly, making it impossible to run two GPUs or memory simultaneously without issues. Either there were serious problems or the system wouldn’t boot at all. I really value dedicated hardware from the Win 9x era, so I’ll admit it’s enjoyable having a system built just for that.
I understand the situation. I assembled an A7N8X system with an X850 XT to let my daughters experiment on 98 SE with various games that often cause problems on other operating systems, such as Dark Omen and Hype. Recently, I discovered a Slot A Athlon board equipped with a 733MHz Thunderbird module in a discarded pile. I’ve been working to revive it, confident it will run 98 SE once it stabilizes. While XP offers a much smoother experience overall, the transition from 98 to XP was eye-opening. I recall how frequently I had to reformat and reinstall with 98 due to unpredictable issues, along with the time it took. Although I don’t dual boot with outdated hardware and software, it’s still quite challenging to revert to older setups after spending so long using SSDs and multi-core systems.
