You're looking to play games on your PC while keeping desktop Linux running. I'm here to share the benefits of WSL. Previously, I used dual boot for non-Mac systems, but with WSL 2 I no longer need that setup. WSL delivers genuine Linux kernel functionality, supporting all sorts of applications—including graphical ones. While I haven't personally used it, it's a solid choice if you're aiming for a Linux desktop experience without switching to Windows. If your main aim is simply to have Linux in your life, this path is quite promising.

I've got Pop-os set up and a few tasks I need help with. My GPU is an Asrock AMD Radeon RX 6900xt, and I want to adjust the fan curve. I’ve found the right software and tried different settings, but it’s not working smoothly—Wine is unstable and Bottles doesn’t run at all. I’m a bit stuck and plan to try again tomorrow. Also, do I need to install AMD driver software to get the best performance from the GPU? Thanks again, Mack.

If I shared this, most people wouldn’t take me seriously. Yet among the countless options, only a few stand out. Here are my tips: Ubuntu leads in search results, Mint ranks second, and Fedora offers the best community support. Red Hat’s influence adds familiarity. Arch demands you explore its wiki; Manjaro has a less cooperative vibe. OpenSUSE is rarely used unless you read this advice. Gentoo is tough but rewarding—great dev team. NixOS needs IRC, and Debian is the foundation for Ubuntu-based distros. Choose what fits your goals.

Wine doesn't affect hardware directly, though driver choices would cause issues if incompatible. For GPU fan settings, use CoreCtrl. The Open Source Drivers belong to Kernel and Mesa, so no extra steps needed—they're ideal for general and gaming use. If you require OpenCL or AMF support, you must install AMDGPU-PRO or at least its OpenCL/AMF modules. Depending on the software, ADMGPU-PRO may work better or worse than the free version, usually reserved for workstations.
