Ask me to be insane… 1080p versus 2/4K resolution.

I thought the jump from 1080p to 1440 was more noticeable than from 1440 to 4K. While 4K in ultra is impressive if you can afford it, I didn’t need it much before buying a 4080. Usually I avoided 4K unless I wanted 60 FPS or higher. Sometimes the 4080 drops just below that frame rate but that’s still 4K with everything pushed to the limit. The lowest I saw it hit was around 53 FPS in Far Cry 6 with the texture pack on (I didn’t really feel the difference if it was enabled). I haven’t played CP2077 properly, but it seems to run about 70 FPS in 4K Ultra. I hope a soon-to-be patch will boost the visuals even more, and I’d like to hope it doesn’t make my 4080 obsolete right away!
It's generally better to go with 24" for 1080p, 30" is ideal but less common, while 38" for 4K works well. As others mentioned, frame rate depends on your gaming style, online play, and other activities. I upgraded from a 24" 1080p setup using a GTX780 to a RTX3090 and an Alienware model, which was a big change at first but rewarding. If you haven't tried a 4K monitor yet, wait until you have and confirm it's a dedicated display, not a TV.
I focus more on frame rate than numbers, as long as it stays above 100. As you mentioned, under 90-100 feels sluggish—just noticeably so after 120-130 FPS. I don’t really care much about the exact value; smooth performance matters more. My setup is a 240Hz monitor, but I rarely hit that speed in games with a 3080. Above 100 is fine for me, whether it’s 100 or higher. I also use a 27-inch 1440p screen and a 34-inch 3440x1440 ultrawide—both give great visuals.
