Ask for a splitter or extender for your modem.
Hello everyone, I recently moved into a new apartment and the wiring isn’t quite right. I left my old extender but found some splitters that could help. In the past, using splitters with the other end unplugged made my connection worse than just connecting directly to the extension. My current splitter is a Commscope model with an input of 6dB and an output of 2.8dB. Should I opt for a cheaper extender or stick with this setup? Also, does the dB difference really matter?
The two-way splitter reduces your signal strength by half. If you need to extend your coaxial cable, opt for a longer length or a barrel connector to make it longer. Under any situation, avoid using a splitter unless you intend to connect other devices to it. Keeping a port open on a splitter can introduce interference into your network, affecting both you and your neighbors. It’s best to choose a splitter with the right number of connectors or use a terminator for unused ports. As mentioned before, splitters weaken the signal, so keep it to a single two-way splitter and never place more than one between the main line and modem.
