Curious about when the PC upgrade to AEM will actually occur? I’m thinking about fitting an ARM board that matches my Ryzen 7 5800X in a case and keeping things cool. Would be great if there were more details on this topic, especially something about high-performance GPUs with two fans!

ARM is set to overtake x86 when Linux takes over Windows (it’s coming soon, believe it). When this happens, an ARM processor matching the speed of a 5800X will become obsolete. Right now we already have ARM chips that act like mid-range x86 chips, but nobody seems to mind.

Eventually, when emulation becomes reliable enough to execute old x86 programs smoothly on ARM devices, it will also require ARM processors powerful enough to handle x86 instructions at the same speed they were originally executed.

This has always been the challenge with the second approach. You don’t change for the same result, only for a different shade. You change when it offers a much greater value than what you currently possess, sufficient to justify the effort of switching.

By the moment an ARM CPU aligns with your 5800x, x86 would have advanced more than it currently does. Improvement isn't limited to just ARM; the difference between x86 and ARM remains significant.

I’m not entirely clear on why the large tech companies are pushing for ARM so strongly—there could be several factors: improving performance on mobile devices, extending battery life, matching Apple’s M series in power efficiency and performance, reducing compilation and build costs, or perhaps cost savings from licensing. ARM chips might also be more affordable and easier to license. While they can’t match x86 in raw performance, if power consumption is a priority, plugging in becomes more attractive.
