Have you attempted to remove the thermal paste? It seems there are no visible marks on the pads, so perhaps he believes the paste is damaged.

I can only describe what I see, but I think it would be a good idea to attempt cleaning it. Using acetone will help ensure it's spotless, and after that, testing it on the board is a smart move. If it works, you're in good shape; if not, you'll know exactly what to do next.
