I'm trying to configure a time machine backup to your file server, but when choosing the backup disk, it doesn't appear even though the destination share is active. I'm using macOS High Sierra 10.13.6.

The issue with Time Machine is its need for HFS+ formatted disks. You probably have ext4 or FAT on your SMB share, which might resolve the problem. Check that link for more details. Another resource you might find useful is https://kirb.me/2018/03/24/using-samba-a...erver.html
