Are you still using Windows 10 or do you need a new version?

Many people have asked this question, but few answers have been useful. I own a Win10 product key for the online version of Windows 10 Home. I'm assembling a brand-new computer, and I plan to repurpose an existing HDD after formatting it. Will I need to purchase Windows 10 again? Or can I simply use my product key? Since my Microsoft account is linked to Windows, should I do that as well?

Assuming it's not an OEM version key, you should be able to apply it to the new PC.

With the new hardware, Windows links that key to your previous device, preventing reuse. A Windows 10 Home license should cost more than £5 on eBay.

These statements aren't accurate. Only MS-related keys will trigger on new devices. Retail keys not tied in will also work, but standard OEM models won't.

The information provided is quite inconsistent, especially since updates in April changed how OEMs functioned with new hardware. Previously, OEMs didn't activate on newer systems. Now, Microsoft seems focused more on market share than actual earnings.
