Are you ready for the update? (BIOS enhancement)
Hi guys, I've been trying to upgrade my BIOS today as I had been having some issues with my computer double booting whenever I would turn it on. My specs are below: Motherboard: Gigabyte AB350-Gaming 3 Processor: Ryzen 5 1400 Memory: 16GB DDR4, XMP Enabled Graphics Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660ti OC 6GB 1TB HDD 500GB SSD (windows install) 1TB NVME drive Everything was going fine until I tried to use Gigabyte's EC FW update tool in order to upgrade to the F40 BIOS version on my AB350-Gaming 3 Motherboard. I will walk you all through the steps below: 1. I downloaded and installed the latest AMD chipset driver from this link: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-...support-dl (version 5.11.02.217) 2. After that, I downloaded the F31 BIOS version and saved it on my USB drive. I also created an image of my BIOS prior to this with the Save BIOS feature. 3. Everything worked 4. Next I wanted to upgrade to version F40, before upgrading to version T52/F52 because it was recommended by the manufacturer on their website. 5. As a prerequisite, it said I needed to download EC FW update tool (from the same link above under Utilities), so I did and installed it, my computer restarts. 6. My computer boots into windows as normal but bluescreens several times with the error KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED 7. Panicked, and presented with the startup repair screen, I restored my system to the restore point created automatically before I installed the latest chipset in Step 1. 8. System keeps booting but just goes to black screen. Read online that EC FW update reverts the BIOS to version F4 and all of its settings including boot order, so re-upgrade it to version F31 from the file on my USB drive, change my boot order back as normal. 9. Now Windows Boot manager on my SSD has disappeared in my BIOS and only what I assume is the old installation on my HDD is available. I am flung in to startup repair every time which says it cannot troubleshoot my PC. So yeah, I'm assuming the restore point is what messed everything up, especially if it means my chipset is incompatible with my BIOS (?). I should have known this would not be plug and play! Does anyone have ANY suggestion of how I can fix this
Save the BIOS update to another machine and install it on a USB drive formatted as fat32. Reduce the BIOS settings. You might have installed CPU microcode (Agesa) that isn't compatible with your processor.
Partition 4 remains apparent in your SSD installation, which is encouraging, though it doesn’t include the boot manager.
That's quite challenging to explain. If the boot sector got damaged, you might be able to recover it using a Windows repair disk. You could visit a computer repair service and seek assistance. Also, consider transferring your files to an external storage device.
You're correct. I'll check if I can visit my nearby store and clarify things, possibly requesting assistance with fixing a repair disk. Right now, backing up my essential files seems like the most practical choice since I'm also planning a clean installation soon.
You set up the BIOS via Windows. The Agesa update in the BIOS update process updates the CPU firmware. If you update the BIOS through BIOS, I’ll update the older compatible Agesa version on the CPU.
Thank you for clarifying. I updated the BIOS using the image I made before switching to F31 (version F7), which restored my boot drive. Now I’m considering obtaining a repair disk since no Windows options appear functional through the repair menu or during a local installation reset.
