Hi there, I’ve been exploring Steam and VR titles a while back. The Steam launcher has become my go-to since I set it up. It tends to be slow, uses up system memory, and feels like it’s not well optimized. My Oculus games are all on an SSD, but the Steam launcher still runs on my HDD because it was installed before the SSD upgrade. I often have to toggle the VR option twice and wait a minute each time. Sometimes I get errors saying it can’t connect to my headset or controllers. Even when playing via Steam, the Oculus software loads too, making load times longer and taking up more resources. I think there should be a direct way to launch Steam games from the Oculus app without opening Steam, but that’s not happening. I’m currently using Steam for Star Trek Bridge Crew, but I’m thinking about switching to the Oculus app instead. Anyone else feel this way or have similar issues? I’m weighing uninstalling and reinstalling on my SSD, but I doubt it fixes the connection problems. Any advice would be appreciated!

- RX 570 4 GB
- 240GB SSD
- 500GB HDD
At first, I wasn’t impressed with Steam. The interface felt confusing and the way to handle games or updates was disorganized. Over time, though, you adapt. It’s not that I enjoy it—I’m just getting used to it. The Epic launcher seemed tidy at first, but it lacked features.
Just logged out of Steam to verify. My storage dropped from 6.0GB to 5.7GB. CPU activity remains unaffected. I haven’t experienced any problems with Steam before, though it might affect systems with fewer resources.
It's noteworthy, my usage spikes from 4% to around 18% while playing Steam VR. The performance feels heavy, especially when the system is running at full capacity. I don’t remember the exact memory consumption, but it clearly impacts other tasks too. It definitely hampers overall speed. I’m not expecting a high-end setup, just something average to mid-range, yet Steam seemed to strain it significantly... LOL
You just started Steam and waited quietly, with no other activity. It seems Steam VR might be handling more than just launching the game.
It seems the device needs to display a screen image while also functioning as a headset before gameplay begins. I’m not sure if it activates automatically, but once inside the game it usually runs smoothly—just occasional audio issues, possibly due to internet problems. Mostly I use Star Trek Bridge Crew VR on Steam.
Get used to the fact that many believe Steam is at its best possible. They’re all supporting Gaben’s modest efforts so he doesn’t push the team into improving client quality. I’ve experienced Steam since its beginnings; its core remains largely unchanged. They might have introduced new features and refined the interface, but it still lags in loading speed, experiences crashes, and has other issues.
Sure, I often use three launchers simultaneously for Star Trek BC—Steam, Oculus, and UPlay... it’s quite a lot!
Valve. Steam has relied on the same system for years, attaching files to it for quite some time now. The launcher is built on the Source engine, which accounts for many of its issues.
It doesn't seem to be the case. The Source Engine is working properly.
