Are you experiencing frequent USB power surge alerts along with sporadic BSODs?
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some guidance on a problem I’ve been facing lately.
System Details:
- Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3
- Ryzen 5 5600
- Radeon RX 6700 XT
- DDR4 2x16GB 3200mhz Adata Gammix d35
- Corsair TX750M Gold PSU
- 256GB 2.5" SATA SSD (installed Windows)
- 1TB M.2 SATA SSD (for games)
Problem Overview:
Recently, I’ve been seeing repeated “Power Surge on USB port” alerts in Windows 11—even when no USB devices are connected. While it doesn’t affect performance noticeably, the alerts are bothersome. More seriously, I’ve encountered several BSODs (specifically Kernel Inpage Data Error) that appear after my secondary SSD (a 1TB M.2 SATA SSD used for games) becomes undetectable. After restarting, it still shows missing in BIOS/Windows. Still, the main SSD works fine. Additionally, a red LED on the power button blinks continuously when the M.2 SATA SSD is detected, but stays red if it isn’t. This behavior raises my concerns.
What I’ve tried so far:
- Temporary workaround: Restarting the system, disconnecting all USB devices, rebooting, and then reattaching them after power-on restored the missing SSD in BIOS/Windows.
- Checked SSD health with CrystalDiskInfo – it still reports 97% health (still good).
- Disabled “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” for all USB controllers in Device Manager, which stopped the power surge warnings.
My concerns:
I’m worried this could indicate a more serious hardware issue and want to figure out which part—motherboard, SSD, or PSU—is likely responsible.
Questions:
- What steps can I take to better isolate the cause?
- Is there a connection between the USB power surge warning and the BSODs triggered by the missing SSD?
- Should I focus more on the motherboard, SSD, or possibly the PSU?
- Any reference images or tips would be appreciated!
Thanks ahead of time for your help!
examine all USB ports for bent pins, broken connections, or any signs of damage. Often the motherboard back plate and case front panel are responsible for USB problems. Disconnect the front panel to test. Consider bread boarding it on a non-conductive surface. Reinstall the AMD chipset drivers. Update the BIOS through the BIOS settings (not via Windows). Test RAM using memtest. Run Windows diagnostics with DISM commands. Perform a virus scan.
Will try checking the USB port for a bent pin
I'm also suspecting a PSU issue that cannot power the entire rig efficiently. would that be a possibility? and also as per the original question, is the USB Power Surge problem linked to the BSOD/SSD error?
