Are you considering improving your platform?
Hello everyone. I own a PC with an Intel i5 14600kf, an MSI Z690 Tomahawk DDR4 motherboard, an RTX 4070 Ti, and 32 GB of DDR4 RAM at 3200 MHz. I’m considering upgrading from DDR4 to DDR5, moving the motherboard from Z690 to Z790. I plan to keep the same processor since it’s powerful enough for gaming. I’m unsure if this is the best choice or if I should wait and upgrade everything at once. I’d appreciate your advice. Thank you.
It’s not worth the time and money:
such a memory upgrade would offer almost no improvement in gaming performance.
Your processor remains one of the top gaming CPUs available.
Currently, there’s no practical upgrade route on your system.
Switching to AM5 doesn’t make much sense right now, especially given the high cost of a B850 motherboard, 9800X3D processor, and 32/64GB DDR5 memory.
Even then, you’d only see a slight boost—around 10%—in CPU performance during gaming at 1440p or 4K.
At those resolutions, your graphics card would still be the main bottleneck.
DDR4 and DDR5 performance are similar.
Outside of built-in graphics, quicker RAM speeds offer limited improvement.
What’s missing from your setup?
Upgrading to I7 and I9 adds more processing threads, which helps with batch applications but isn’t as beneficial for gaming.
The i9-14900K could provide a slight gaming enhancement.
