Are you considering constructing a budget gaming PC?
Hello after missing out on several auctions on the bay, I’m thinking about getting a budget gaming PC. I’ve been checking out many YouTube videos and seem to have a solid idea starting with a Dell Optiplex 5040. Windows 10, an i5-6500 processor at 3.2Ghz, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD. I’m considering pairing it with an MSI Cmp30hx 6GB GPU or a GRX 1060, though the monitor ports aren’t visible in the pictures. I plan to upgrade the RAM later. Will this setup handle games like GTA5 or RDR2?
What resolution are you using? I recommend 32gb DDR4 from the gate.
Don't cut corners on the RAM.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
A solid choice would be a Dell Optiplex 5040.
Which size are you considering? How much are you willing to invest in the whole setup? Dell's prebuilt units are known for their exclusive connectors and PSUs that can limit performance when paired with high-end GPUs. Plus, the internal design isn't ideal for airflow or heat management.
You might try a sleeper configuration, but building from scratch is better if you're getting more comfortable with PC components and learning about them.

Thanks for the fast responses! I also noticed the Dell connectors in the videos. I’m currently watching this one…
For the HP EliteDesk 800 G3, it’s running Intel Core i7 7700 with 16GB DDR4 and 128GB SSD plus a 1TB HDD. I plan to upgrade RAM and add a decent budget GPU. I was thinking of building from scratch but wanted a quicker path. I hope the final build looks like a rusty dystopian case with red LEDs for effect, while still handling games like GTA or RDR2—almost blind in one eye—but at least it can run them. I’d be happy with a 720 resolution. 🤓
If you choose the prebuilt path, ensure you have at least an Intel 8000 series or AMD Ryzen 2000 series or higher. This is recommended because Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates after October, while workarounds exist. An i7 8700 would be a good starting point. Avoid slim cases. As mentioned before, Dell and similar brands often use proprietary connections on newer models, so if you have a specific system in mind, research videos on swapping the power supply or checking for available adapters.
However, the 7700 can handle RDR2 and GTA5 with a good mid-range GPU, but I'm still using Windows 10 as long as everything functions fine.
That’s acceptable, but it’s clear they plan to reduce support eventually. And it could be a while before games or other features stop working smoothly—your decision is ultimately yours, but if you’re investing your money, it makes sense to choose something that works well with your setup.
For instance, in this case…

It seems like a typical PSU. You should check the model details to understand its components.
For a more affordable option, you might find something similar, though the compact power supply could be tough and the proprietary connector—though there are videos showing others adapting those setups.
