Are you certain about defragmenting now? (Answer confirmed)
Considering the title mates, should I run a defragmentation? I've already used O&O Defrag, Diskeeper, and the standard Windows version. However, I noticed my performance on my WD Black has been about 160mb/s, and I haven't defragmented since it was new (about 4 weeks ago). From past experience with other drives, regular defragmentation usually boosts speeds but eventually loses its advantage. The key question is... Should you defragment? If yes, how often and which tool? I'm using Windows 8.1 with a 120GB SSD for boot, a 1TB Western Digital Black for games/software, plus an extra drive for recording game footage with Shadowplay.
I understand that... perhaps it would have been better to say it earlier. Just curious, since the benefits of defragmenting fade quickly.
Avoid defragmenting an SSD to prevent any harm; it offers no real speed gain. On traditional hard drives, it can be useful, but modern file systems minimize its impact. I suggest setting Windows' default defrag schedule to once a month at most. I usually run it manually every six months without issues. EDIT: Skipping weekly defrags is advised because excessive defragmentation can significantly wear out the HDD.
Largely, I think the issues I've faced are from capturing video using Shadowplay. Recording doesn't seem like a good reason to spend time defragmenting.
