8GB of RAM is extremely inadequate for smooth operation of Windows 11. It's understandable that you're encountering numerous hard page faults because the available memory doesn't meet the demands of your tasks. You'll likely need to upgrade to at least two 8GB modules, or ideally two 16GB units.

I'm uncertain about replacing internal components; the Surface line appears more like tablets, making larger RAM upgrades challenging đź« . I think the device originally ran on Windows 10, and if I can find a way to revert it would help it function better until I can afford an upgrade. My job depends heavily on this machine, so at least I need it to run smoothly without frequent crashes to save money for a better computer. Switching from Audacity to Reaper might ease things (just learning the new tool), and using lighter malware software could also be useful since Windows Defender seems to be causing many issues. When I paused it temporarily, Latencymon reported no problems, but once it resumed, thousands of page faults appeared every minute.

1. Windows Defender uses minimal system resources compared to other antivirus solutions.
2. The 118GB hard drive offers only 9% free space, which is insufficient for a professional workstation.
3. The 8GB of RAM is insufficient for Windows 10 or 11 and doesn’t meet the needs of audio recording applications.
In short, regardless of budget, your Surface isn’t suitable for your requirements.

Ah, it's a tablet. In that scenario you should lower the workload you're handling. The frequent hard page faults suggest Windows is struggling to manage the heavy demand in its 8GB of memory. If you depend on it for tasks, you should halt all non-essential applications. You may want to revert to Windows 10, as it uses less memory than Windows 11, although the difference isn't significant. It's unfair for manufacturers to market Windows 11 devices with just 8GB of RAM—it will function in that amount but perform poorly otherwise.
