Are there any AMD gaming motherboards with DP alt mode ports suitable for portable displays?
I really enjoy using my portable monitor as a secondary display, especially when I carry it with me alongside my laptop for work. Intel offers Thunderbolt ports that can support it, and I’m considering upgrading to AMD’s newer models in the future. Online searches give mixed advice—some say it works, others say not. Can anyone clarify which port type to focus on?
The screen receives input from a specific source. Certain DisplayPort connections won’t function because they’re incompatible or lack proper adapters. When using passive cables like DP to Type C, the setup must match the device’s requirements.
Usb4 connections include built-in DP protocols. He suggested using just a single c-c cable; dp-c passive cables lack power supply and would require an additional c-c cable for power.
Power delivery from a USB4 port isn't reliable. For desktops, using any DP port with the correct cable and separate power works. My X670E Taichi supports displayport via its two USB4 ports powered by the iGPU. @SlowIron should review the master spreadsheet. B650, B850, X670, and X870 all offer Type C ports for video output but may lack consistent power support—check each board’s documentation carefully to confirm capabilities. Also verify if the USB4 port connects directly to the iGPU or needs a DP cable from the GPU to the DP-In port on the board.
