Are free antivirus programs any good?
I suggest Avast or AVG, and it's a good idea to use Malwarebytes too.
I believe we really need some improvement here, or we should look into software options. This question seems to come up too often, and I'm starting to feel overwhelmed. On the other hand: for free antivirus solutions, you’d likely want Avira or Bitdefender. Bitdefender is lighter on resources but offers fewer customization choices. If you’re going for a paid product, consider Bitdefender or Kaspersky. I’d probably choose Kaspersky because their team has uncovered many security vulnerabilities in the past. You might also explore AVTEST, an independent company that rates antivirus programs (Bitdefender and Kaspersky are the leading two).
malware bytes mainly contains malware and adware, while Windows Defender acts as antivirus and adware protection. Windows Defender 8 runs in the background, and using the free Bytes Scan once a week or every two weeks is recommended. I purchased an Amazon LiftTime key, which is highly worthwhile. The full version effectively blocks harmful sites like Chrome and other potential issues.
Current Windows firewall setup. Antivirus and malware protection active for more than five years. No apparent necessity required.
Free antivirus solutions aren’t always the best choice, but if you’re looking for reliability, they can work well. Over the past five years I’ve stuck with Norton Antivirus, which I suggest purchasing from this site for a reasonable price. What I appreciate is how it doesn’t demand constant attention—just a periodic check to keep your PC clean and running smoothly. It’s also quite user-friendly, offering clear information about blocked programs and websites. For me, it’s worth it because it’s affordable, easy to obtain, and provides solid protection without the hassle.
I strongly dislike Norton. It feels overly intrusive and heavy, with many false alarms. Even when installed but not enabled, it behaves just like various malware or adware.
