Are Destiny 2 causing crashes on personal computers?
Hello everyone,
After considerable effort, it appears that Destiny 2 is consistently causing instability on my girlfriend’s computer. The system functions normally until she launches the game, at which point it freezes completely, and her computer refuses to respond. She has to use the CTRL+ALT+DEL command, but even then, nothing happens until she resorts to a hard reset. Following this, the motherboard automatically initiates a repair process, only to repeatedly fail and restart. We’ve taken it to multiple repair shops, but technicians are unable to diagnose the problem and typically reinstall Windows 10. They have thoroughly tested individual components, finding no defects within the hardware itself. The computer runs flawlessly for several weeks before D2 is installed, after which the entire process repeats itself. I’m becoming increasingly frustrated and, despite seeking assistance on D2 forums, haven't found a definitive solution. We’ve concluded that we will not be installing or playing D2 on this machine again, but I want to understand the underlying cause. Here are our system specifications and a link to my initial post on the Blizzard Forums:
i5-9600k processor
16 GB of RAM
WD Blue 1 TB hard drive
GTX 1060 SC graphics card
MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Edge AC motherboard
Windows 10 operating system

I will be taking it to a third PC repair store for a complete Windows reinstall and purchasing a new hard drive. I suspect that the motherboard may be attempting to repair the C drive, potentially due to something D2 is installing on the hard drive. However, it’s important to note that no other programs or games have presented any issues on the PC—games like DOOM, Metro Redux, Borderlands 2, and The Sims 3 all run perfectly—until D2 is installed. This isolated issue strongly suggests a problem with how D2 interacts with the hard drive, though I’m not a computer expert and simply trying to understand what's occurring.
I will update this post once the machine has been repaired with a new hard drive, but we’ve firmly decided against reinstalling D2 on this PC ever again. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as we’ve invested significantly in this computer and simply want to know what is happening.
Thank you.
What power supply and model are you using? What are the temperatures of your central processing unit and graphics card while playing games?
I’m unable to provide the current system temperature, but we recently attempted to start her computer, and it successfully loaded to the desktop initially. However, it quickly froze. Regarding the power supply unit (PSU), she’s using a Corsair CX 650M. All she tried to do was open Chrome, but nothing happened – just a blue circle around her cursor for several minutes, yet no other action occurred. The blue circle disappeared, but she couldn’t click anything despite the cursor moving and being unable to access Task Manager. She then restarted by pressing the power button. During this restart, the motherboard logo appeared, but nothing else loaded; there were no loading indicators or text displayed, and the computer’s LED remained completely static (a solid blue color without flickering) for 30 minutes. She restarted again, and the same problem persisted, so I checked the boot order in the BIOS settings. Here’s what I recorded:
UEFI Hard Disk: Windows Boot Manager
UEFI USB Key
CD/DVD Drive: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NSCO
UEFI USB Hard Disk
UEFI USB CD/DVD Drive
UEFI Network Adapter
Hard Disk: WDC WD10EZEX-22MFCAO
UEFI CD/DVD Drive
USB Hard Disk
USB CD/DVD Drive
USB Key
USB Floppy Drive
Network Adapter
I also took a screenshot of the screen to gather additional information that might be helpful:
CPU Speed: 3.70 GHz
DDR Speed: 2133 MHz
CPU Temperature: 50°C
Motherboard Temperature: 41°C
BIOS Mode: UEFI/Legacy
VCore Voltage: 1.072V
DDR Voltage: 1.200V
BIOS Version: E7B17IMS.A00
BIOS Build Date: 8/31/2018
I didn’t modify any settings; I only accessed the BIOS to document the boot order and capture a screen image. Upon exiting, I received the message: “Reboot and select proper boot device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot Device and press a key.” The computer now either allows me to enter the BIOS or displays this message, with nothing else happening. I suspect it is requesting an operating system CD. However, the computer was installed at a repair shop some time ago, and we don’t have that CD. Our current plan is to order a replacement OS CD, reinstall the operating system on the computer, avoid playing Destiny 2, and observe if the issue recurs. If this problem continues, I’m confident that it's a hardware malfunction rather than related to Destiny 2. However, I want to emphasize that the computer functioned perfectly for months without incident until we installed Destiny 2, at which point this problem began.
