Apparently random restart
Apparently random restart
Recent updates to my home setup have brought some unusual behavior with devices. Occasionally, switching off the light near the TV triggers static on the bottom portion of the display. A couple of weeks back there was a brief power interruption (under a second), which only briefly affected my PC before it restarted. After restarting, everything functioned normally. Three days prior, my computer experienced its first random crash while playing a game on Fedora. It displayed a sudden black screen for a few seconds before booting again. The crash didn’t show any error codes, just a brief blackout followed by a startup sequence. On Windows 10, it operated without any BSOD. I examined the machine thoroughly but found nothing visible. I checked for burnt components on MoBo and discovered none. I replaced the thermal paste, unplugged extra cables (like front I/O), yet the issue persisted. After several tries, I reached the login screen on Fedora and switched to tty, then ran memory tests with memtester—results were clean. All checks passed. This moment made me suspect the problem lies in the GUI rather than CLI. It seems the crash might happen under specific conditions, such as: * viewing a login screen frame and then crashing * entering a password and pressing enter * after toggling calendar or notifications * after launching certain apps (like Discord or Firefox) * pressing the Windows key * other random occurrences I attempted to replicate the failure using a Radeon R7 340/240 GPU from my old system, but it remained stable. Eventually, I gathered crash logs from both operating systems and tried various fixes: * restoring default BIOS settings and updating the BIOS * testing a single RAM stick in its slot * updating the chipset * turning off the c6 state in Fedora * disabling Global C-state Control in BIOS * changing Power Supply Idle Control to "Typical Current Idle" in BIOS * connecting the GPU to a different PCIe lane. None resolved the issue. I discovered that the instability appears only when certain UI elements appear, such as after seeing one login frame or interacting with specific software. I also found that CPU issues seem common, especially with certain AMD configurations and Gigabyte boards. At this stage, I’m struggling to pinpoint the exact fault—could it be the power supply, CPU, GPU, RAM, or something else? Thanks for your understanding. Feel free to ask for more details if needed.
I'll reach out to an old friend who rebuilt my old computer. They might have useful spare parts for troubleshooting.
