While exploring diskutil in the terminal, I saw an APFS defragmentation option. Since my TimeMachine HDD runs APFS, I enabled it. That setting appears to be somewhat obscure, but it could help maintain performance on storage devices that use newer file systems. It’s likely designed for users who still rely on traditional HDDs.

APFS was designed for flash and SSD drives. It seems Apple expects users to rely on Mac OS Extended for hard disk drives, since the speed benefits of APFS don’t apply to HDDs.
