Hi guys! I'm having some trouble with my fx-8350 CPU. It's OC'd to 4.5ghz, but the thermal margin in AOD is stable at 25°C, while my HWmonitor and the motherboard's sensor show the temperature at 68°C. Some sources say a 25°C margin is ideal, and others warn that anything above 65°C isn't good. I'm not sure which to follow—should I stick to the thermal margin or the actual CPU temperature? Thanks in advance!

HWmonitor and similar tools typically do not display the real temperature for FX processors. AMD Overdrive is the only one that provides accurate readings. A 25°C margin in Overdrive indicates a processor temperature of 45°C, which is safely below the 70°C limit for FX processors. Is the 25°C reading from Overdrive at idle or under load?

Redneck5439:
These tools are usually not accurate for FX processors. AMD Overdrive is the best option to get the correct temperature reading. A 25°C margin in Overdrive suggests your processor is around 45°C, which is safe under the 70°C limit for FX chips. Are you sure the 25C reading is at idle or during load?

As long as Overdrive indicates you have a 25C "cushion" and you're running at full load, it's fine. HWmonitor works well, but AMD FX processors often fail to report their correct temperatures consistently with HWmonitor. Overdrive remains the only tool that accurately shows the true temperatures of FX processors.

The system performs well as long as Overdrive reports a 25C "cushion" and the processor is under full load. HWmonitor works well, but AMD FX chips often show incorrect temperatures despite HWmonitor's accuracy. Only Overdrive reliably shows the true temps for FX processors.
I’d like to know the maximum safe thermal margin—some sources say 10C is ideal, while others suggest 20C and above is excellent. Thanks!

Most overclockers won't push past 10C thermal margin. With 10C thermal margin the processor is running at 60C. 70C is the thermal max for FX processors. a 10C temp cushion is all you really need, but if anything happens, ie a power fluctuation that makes a fan run slower for a couple seconds, anything at all that can cause a temp spike can raise your temp a few degrees. If your already at say 65C then a temp spike of only a couple seconds can potentially damage your CPU. Most overclockers like the full 10C cushion to ensure that doesn't happen.
