I’m curious about how long it’s been since someone upgraded to Windows 10 before purchasing a new PC or parts. Personally, I’m waiting until CES 2026 before considering a compact gaming system. What’s the most recent Windows 10 version you’ve installed? How often do you replace your computers?

I have an old laptop with a first-generation Core i CPU, which means it won’t receive updates from Microsoft. I’m still unsure about its future use, especially since it’s not in regular use. I’ve tried running Linux before, so that could be a sensible option. The main system stays current enough, though updates might be a few years apart. I’m holding off as long as possible because I dislike reinstalling software and setting it up again.

I'm eager for the end of Windows 10 EOL so I won't keep receiving bothersome updates.

My daily driver laptop is from 2017 (Latitude 5480 with a 7th gen i7 and GeForce 930MX), so I'm about due to replace it in the next couple years anyway. Said replacement will probably be an M4 Pro MacBook Pro. That "nano-texture" matte display is nice in person; press photos and video reviews don't do it justice. Maybe it will get discounted a bit when the next generation comes out, but there's plenty of refurbished stock now.

I pay little attention to the end-of-life of Windows 10 and don’t think it matters for upgrading your system.

I don't blame you. My M1 MacBook Air (8GB RAM) is my go-to machine for everyday tasks when I'm not experimenting with Linux, BSD, or needing Windows for gaming. I stick to Windows only for games and for work/study. Outside of that, I'm a full Mac and Linux enthusiast. Edited June 11, 2025 by MC.Morrado typo

Works well with 11 using rufus to create a bootable USB. For operating systems, even Core 2 Duo devices can run 11 when installed via rufus. There are also Windows 10 LTS and IoT LTS versions supported through 2027 and 2032 respectively. This means 10 will remain available for many years.

I prefer not to rely on temporary fixes or unofficial modifications for my everyday work laptop. I’ve tried a Hackintosh before and know the risks involved.

I’m using an older Core2Quad machine as a media server running Windows 10. I’m not planning to use Rufus to switch to Windows 11 there. It’s just that I’m experiencing issues with Windows 11 on my primary PC…

I'm holding out on just the upgrade, my PC can run 11 it just doesn't yet, and I just have no actual reason to switch until I have to.
