I used the small-nose pliers, but couldn't secure the screw since there was almost no space to work with.
You’d require a tool with sharpened tips to secure itself onto the metal. A new screw is almost certain to be damaged during installation (it’s already worn out from the stripped head, probably a Torx six-point). Gripper tools will grip the metal tightly.
Generally, I've found success with this technique, or with star-shaped and hexagonal screwdriver bits.
