The top antivirus protection comes from yourself. You decide the path, the files, and the clicks. Bitdefender, Panda, Sophos stand out for strong malicious URL blocking. Agnitum Outpost (found in Avast!, AVG) and InJoy Firewall offer solid firewall options if you set them up correctly. Comodo and Avast include sandboxing capabilities. Norton and F-secure provide robust antivirus features. ClamAV is open-source software. Many include backup, synchronization, parental controls, social media filtering, and user-friendly interfaces with virus-free assurances. Choosing the right one depends on your needs. Before deciding, verify the company’s honesty—check privacy claims and policies. Ensure they don’t hide behind tricks like claiming heuristic scanning works without whitelists or popups. PCMag offers clear reviews and understandable 5-star ratings.

For free protection, consider Avast, Windows 8 Defender, Microsoft Security Essentials, and Malwarebytes.

Another point is how strong you want the software to be. I tried free versions of Norton and noticed it was too intrusive, always asking about my activities... But that’s its intended function. Now I’m getting frustrated with it. Also, remember there’s a distinction between malware and viruses—Linus made a video explaining it.
