I have a stronger case for you regarding the future. Older titles work fine on PC as long as the operating system supports them, though results can vary based on hardware. Consoles require ongoing costs to remain online and add value, especially when purchasing new games. Buying used is an alternative, but it benefits neither developers nor players. Consoles offer customization, though this often comes at the expense of the manufacturer’s stance toward independent creators. Exceptions exist with companies like Microsoft for the original Xbox. Sony and Nintendo don’t back such approaches. I own modified consoles, including a PS2 slim that now supports 1080P output via components. My Xbox also runs a hardware TSOP flash with XBMC and uses a 2TB HDD connected via SATA/PATA adapter and a 144A cable. Graphics upgrades aren’t possible on consoles, which is well known. Consoles can simulate older systems—my original Xbox can play PS1 and N64 games—but N64 needs a RAM upgrade for full performance, making it challenging for beginners.
Eh I guess one defense for the consoles is that you keep your old system and play those old games. The Xbox One now supports 360 backwards compatibility and it doesn't make it so you have to buy all your old games again. Which unfortunately the PS4 still does not support older games on their disc, though Sony is sort of getting there and some rumors of them possibly being in the works of at least PS2(and probably PS1) backwards compatibility. Which I mean doesn't affect me too much because all my games were for the 360 and then recently I got a PS4 so I was already moving to a new platform and GTA V had already came to the PS4. To each their own... For those with slower internet sometimes waiting for a game to download is an absolute PITA sometimes an update can be hell, so by consoles still using disc for their games is a lot better than having to wait half a day or longer for a 50gb game to download. Hearkening back to the inherent superiority of PCs certainly it is cool that if one wanted to play like Fallout 1 or 2 they could easy just get a used CD or get it off Steam.
This acutally most of the reason for me to be on PC. I could still kinda play those games bought for Win95. They will be glitched because of DX but they will work. Unlike most PS2 or 8bit Nintendo games from my console years. Why would you need one? This thread has been very clean and intelligent. Not all topics with such title are bad.
