I own a machine from 2011 that hasn't been modified since then, which is why I'm still getting the hang of things. It's an Intel i5-2310 chip, runs on two memory channels with two slots each, capped at 32 GB using DDR3. Right now I'm using two 4-GB sticks (PGV38G1600ELK) totaling eight GB. I explored some upgrade ideas to reach sixteen GB of RAM and wanted your thoughts or alternative suggestions.

If you think there are better ways, or if you have more details about the specs I should know, just let me know. I only recently took it apart and cleaned it out after thirteen years, so any extra advice would be great.

Looking ahead, my goal is to improve each component except the motherboard and CPU, which seem solid for today. Boosting RAM is likely the first step—since my system uses about half its capacity with just a browser open—and swapping the hard drive for an SSD would make a big difference.

The two choices match in price, but the first offers greater memory capacity, which is why I’d pick that one. Of course, it’s unclear if the investment is justified given the system’s age. Could you share your specific needs or goals for this upgrade?

Don’t worry about the ram IDs unless it’s a single revision—most modern chips from Hynix, Samsung, and Micron look quite alike. 2Gbit is different but should still function. Sandy’s IMC is pretty solid thanks to the 21.33x multiplier. If your board supports RAM overclocking, my P8Z68 Deluxe can try a stable 2200DDR3 boost in a 4x1 setup with some 1GB sticks—expect little to no changes if you want to run 2133 DDR3.

I've thought about this too, because I realize I'll eventually have to upgrade each part. However, since my CPU runs at 2.9 GHz (quad-core, though I'm not sure if that means four times 2.9 or just between them), I wanted to stick with the existing shell and motherboard while improving the other components. After all, CPUs and graphics cards are what drive up costs, so a system that works at least in basic games is essential. Would you recommend giving up on the project and replacing everything? If yes, do you usually prefer building from modules or using pre-built options?

I didn’t need to replace anything or fix the previous build; I simply wanted to use the AM4 components I already had and thought it would work fine. EDIT: I checked the board model, and it appears suitable for daily operation.

It shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes to start up, especially since switching from HDD to SSD would fix that. I also work on coding and other projects, so games probably use the most resources. The shell seems important for performance, but browsing feels okay thanks to Opera’s improvements. Technically, we bought it ready-made, but it came from a maker that assembles machines from separate components. Mostly they use ASUS parts. By 2011’s standards, aside from the graphics card, it was a top-tier system, featuring a 2-TB HDD and vivid blue LEDs around every fan, for... some reason. It includes roughly 20 USB ports on the back, a complete set of six 3.5-mm jacks, and supports VGA, DVI, HDMI, etc. That’s a relief. The fact that companies still produce DDR3 drives was encouraging. From what I know, it’s the limited RAM and old graphics card that cause most of my gaming problems, and the HDD slows things down a lot. I’d like to test it gradually and tackle one thing at a time, so memory seems like the best place to start.
