I've observed an unusual behavior on my Mint 19.1 system. When the external monitor is active, the laptop screen disappears. Switching off the external monitor restores the laptop display. After the screen saver starts, I must re-enter my password to reach the desktop. Everything seems fine otherwise. The strange part is that after logging in and turning the external monitor back on, I no longer need to re-enter the password and am immediately taken to the desktop. Have others noticed this issue? Was it fixed in later updates?

It's definitely a recognized mistake. What makes it odd is that I'm one of those quirky people using MATE.

Switch your display manager to another option and that should resolve the problem if it's related to the login screen. It seems Linux Mint 20 might include a solution.
