Typically the mainboard works fine, but sometimes it acts odd. Recently we swapped out our HP OEM with Windows 7 on a HPC downstairs. We received a free upgrade to Windows 10. I set up a brand-new system using the Z370 platform and only moved the 850 EVO SSD from the previous setup. After reinstalling Windows 10, I tried the activation key from the free upgrade, but it failed. Then I used the Windows 7 license key from the old HP sticker, and it activated instantly—no phone required.

The OEM key remains linked to your motherboard because that's how the device is recognized.
