Hello everyone, I’m seeking more insights from the forum about my planned upgrade from my i7-7700k. I’m considering switching to Team RED because it provides good value and performance. I have two options in mind: an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950x paired with an X399 AORUS Gaming 7 for $550 (used), and a new AMD Ryzen 9 3950x that will work with an AORUS motherboard. I’m still undecided about the Ryzen 9 model. From my research, the main difference is that the 1950x uses PCIe Gen 3, while the 3950x uses PCIe Gen 4. My goal is to build a machine for streaming, editing, and gaming. I look forward to your thoughts and thanks in advance!

opt for the 3950X without hesitation. Your 1950X is showing signs of aging; this model runs faster, uses resources smarter, and offers better overall performance. Threadripper iS only worth considering if you absolutely require maximum PCIe bandwidth—something you won’t need for a gaming or streaming rig.

It varies based on your budget. Typically, large storage for archived videos uses HDDs, whereas smaller NVMe drives are used for active projects.

The 1950x is significantly inferior to a 7700k, especially for gaming. It was built differently and struggles with performance compared to standard Ryzen models. It works well for editing but still faces challenges with Threadripper 1000 and 2000 due to its design. Threadripper 3000 addressed these issues and now delivers much better results than the newer versions in Windows. Linux sees a more noticeable improvement as it adapts better. For streaming and editing, a 3900x is sufficient. If you wait until November 5th, the 5900x will likely offer better gaming performance. Of course, keep an eye on benchmark results.

The Ryzen 5000 series (Zen 3) should launch in about 20 days. Performance per core will improve by roughly 20% to 15-20% compared to the Ryzen 3000 (Zen 2). Rumors suggest the Ryzen 5000 could surpass Intel in nearly all areas. I’d suggest the Ryzen 7 5800X or the Ryzen 9 5900X.
