Hello everyone, recently I swapped out my motherboard to an ASRock B450M Pro4. It comes with VRM heatsinks and a 8-pin power connector, which is better than my previous one that couldn't handle the MSI B450M-A PRO MAX CPU. I attempted to manually overclock it since rendering 3D models only reached around 3.8-9 GHz, while most people can push it to 4.2+ GHz. Gradually I realized something was off—the chip seemed stuck at 4.15 GHz at 1.3875V. It didn’t even reach 4.2 GHz at 1.5V. Before that, using a CoolerMaster 460W PSU, it worked at 4.15 GHz, but switching to a 700W PSU caused issues. Now, when I started rendering, the PC would crash, briefly increasing voltage and lowering frequency (to 4.125), but it still shut down completely—just with loud fans spinning and needing a restart. Running it at higher voltages for long periods might damage the chip. Temperatures are normal, around 78°C in a closed case (73-75°C when open).
It seems the issue lies with the motherboard itself. Even though it supports overclocking, its VRM quality might be average. I’d consider a cautious overclock and stay under 100-200 MHz on the base frequency.
I consistently push 140 amps through the same board, which moved up a tier on the list showing its strength. It's an excellent overclocker. I own two of them—the top B450 value board available. Still, it feels like a bit of a gamble with silicon. How about your RAM? What speed is it handling? Are you certain it isn't overheating and leading to the black screen?
Sure, I'm confident about the temperatures. I ran it at 1.5V for over ten minutes without any crashes, and the temps stayed below 82 degrees. Even during peak usage, power consumption was around 175W with occasional spikes up to 200W. In Cinebench, I observed crashes after about 60-70% completion—possibly because the guidelines there are more challenging. Regarding RAM, it's a standard Kingston 8GB at 2400 MHz (dual channel).
