I'm setting up another machine for friends to enjoy when they visit. I'm keeping costs reasonable. I've already picked up an UD7 990FX motherboard from Gigabyte. I'm planning to use an 8GB RAM kit, but I'm curious how a 4300 would perform with games. It seems like it should work fine, though I'd appreciate hearing if anyone else is using one. I intend to start with a single 970 and upgrade later. We'll play titles such as BF3, BF4, BFBK2, COH2, and some GTA 5 when they release.

The 4300 could cause a slowdown in your 970...

It's not great for single-threaded work, which most games prefer. AMD chips usually shine with good multithreading or multitasking—such as streaming while playing or handling rendering/editing. If gaming is your only focus, you'd have done better on an Intel platform.

It's true, anything under the FX-6300 falls short. I think FM2+ would have been a better choice, especially with an Athlon 860k.

Each game requires varying levels of CPU power, but I’m pretty confident BF3, BF4 (especially with multiplayer) and CoH 2 might struggle on an FX-4300. We don’t know how GTA V will perform, but it seems wise to expect a strong processor for it. At around $340, the GTX 970 still appears like a solid option even with a modest chip, though I’m not planning to focus much on SLI just now.

I planned to purchase a 6300 but had no issues securing it. If I had managed to save a bit, I’d have gotten a quad-core processor instead. Doesn’t the 4th generation chip support multiple cores, like four?

It utilizes every core and thread available to you.

However, the cores in the FX 4000 line are pretty average at best. A quad-core Intel definitely runs faster than a quad-core FX model. If you can afford it, go for an i5. Otherwise, the 6300 works fine, but aim for something closer to the 8320 if possible.
