AMD 5950X performance and PBO 2 details
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some guidance on my setup. I stress tested my AMD 5950X with Cinebench and reached 90°C. I’m using a Corsair iCUE H150i ELITE CAPELLIX cooler and enabled Precision Boost Overdrive 2. Based on what I’ve read, I have a few questions:
Question 1: Is 90°C really too high for this setup? What temperatures should I aim for at the best?
Question 2: Can reaching 90°C with this CPU be considered normal or safe?
Question 3: If I manage to lower the temps, should I enable PBO 2 in BIOS or can I adjust it through AMD Ryzen Master? Any tips?
Question 4: If I enable XMP profiles and run diagnostics, does that confirm everything is working properly? I’m open to more details.
I’m planning to start by cleaning the thermal paste, possibly removing some, since I suspect I might have applied too much. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
It looks like 90°C on a 360mm AIO is excessive, especially with PBO2. Even at the max power limit of 105W, temperatures should stay around 75°C maximum. I saw similar readings with my 3900X and a 280mm AIO, so it might be an issue with the cooler performance, mounting pressure, paste quality, or fan curve settings.
Thanks for the feedback. The video seemed quite feasible for me. I could try this approach and review the outcomes later.
You can use Ryzen Master with the default PBO settings for your stress test. No changes needed unless you want specific adjustments. With the defaults, expect temperatures near 61°C and clock speeds around 3.770 MHz under Cinebench. For the second scenario, temperatures reach about 90°C but stay below 90.6°C, with noticeable throttling at ~4.350 MHz. Thermal paste application is advisable to improve heat dissipation.
it doesn't matter, someone has already checked if too much thermal paste would impact temperatures, and it didn't. yes no
