This is a good time to upgrade as there are impressive new CPUs and GPUs out. But at the same time, I think that there are some major caveats to upgrading right now, with DDR5 coming next year, and a lack of adoption of Thunderbolt and USB4 in currently-available motherboards. I've been looking for a motherboard for a Ryzen 5000 build, and many boards have a USB 3.2 type-C port, but none of the ones I've looked-at specifically say it has Thunderbolt 3 support. From what I've read, all Thunderbolt 3 ports work as USB3 ports, but the reverse isn't true. Does that mean that the USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port on this motherboard won't support Thunderbolt? https://www.newegg.ca/asus-rog-strix-x57...6813119111 What are some decent AM4 motherboards with a Thunderbolt 3 port? And are there currently any AM4 motherboards with a USB4 port?

Typically, most boards feature just one USB port or Thunderbolt connection.

USB4 is not officially released yet, I don't think. And I also don't know of any AM4 motherboards with Thunderbolt 3. But that's what add-in cards are for. https://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-Alpine-T...B0722SV69N Here's one.

Gigabyte B550 Vision D also supports Thunderbolt 3. You can find more details here: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B55...-rev-10#kf Some boards offer a header for Thunderbolt, allowing you to install separate cards if needed. USB 4 is still in development and hasn't been standardized yet; it's unclear whether Intel will stop using proprietary methods. I don’t expect major issues. DDR5 will likely arrive by next year, but it won’t be cheaper than current memory, and early versions probably won’t be noticeably faster than DDR4. The transition from DDR3 to DDR4 took time, just like the shift from DDR3 1600/1866 to DDR4 2133/2400. USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4 are expected to arrive gradually, with most devices still supporting USB 3.2 Gen2 for now. I believe upgrading today will remain reliable for at least three to four years, especially with the rapid progress of new AMD processors.
