Currently, the need for proxies seems less urgent as VPNs are widely available. Eric, that makes sense.

Proxies and VPNs differ in function; they aren't the same and don't fulfill identical roles.

There is some overlap, but proxy servers and VPNs serve different purposes. If your goal is simply to send traffic through another server to avoid regional restrictions, using a proxy over a VPN isn't usually necessary for most users. In business settings and corporate networks, proxy servers play a crucial role, while VPNs are typically used for connecting sites rather than direct client connections.

I completely support the responses you provided—yet they didn’t cover the actual purpose of proxy servers versus VPNs. A VPN focuses on redirecting your requests to another device while encrypting data between your machine and the server. This is particularly helpful on unsecured Wi-Fi or for remote employees needing access to internal networks. Proxy servers, on the other hand, operate within the same network as you, routing traffic through them before it reaches the destination. They offer privacy, traffic monitoring, and even caching for frequent sites. In short, for personal use they often add little value, but in business environments they remain highly valuable.

Websites you access usually go through a proxy, which is widely used in hosting setups. The idea of using a VPN seems related to proxying, but these purposes are distinct.
