I own a Maximus IX with an 1151 socket and an I5 7500. About three years ago I built the PC and noticed performance issues with my Asus GTX 1080 GPU. I mistakenly purchased a MOBO/CPU bundle on Amazon, not realizing there were compatibility problems. After searching, I think upgrading to an i7 7700k would be ideal but limited by availability and cost. The I7 6700k is another option, though it’s also hard to find and pricey. Should I sell my current setup and buy a new one, or go with the 7700k or 6700k?

Consider pairing it with an R5 3600 and B450 for optimal performance.

Generally yes. A 6700/7700K model is only worthwhile under $200, which is a uncommon price to see. Ryzen remains very attractive for Skylake and Kaby Lake upgrade builds today.

Examining R5 3600 indicates the CPU has surpassed the GPU in power. This change might lead to complications. The GTX 1080 can still be boosted, but you may need to adjust settings to maintain performance.

No, usually a bottleneck will come from the cpu because it can't process data as fast as your gpu pinning the cpu at really high usage with much lower usage on the gpu. This does not really apply the other way. If you gpu is running at its full capability and there is spare cpu leftover then you are not really missing out on performance. This being said you still want to have a balance, don't want to get a crazy powerful cpu and pair it with a weak gpu. Put yeah the 3600 with the 1080 should be lit

From the 3600 and B450, it looks more affordable compared to the I7 7700k or 6700k. Great help from everyone! Thanks a lot! 😊
