I enjoy connecting my headphones into the rear of my computer via the headphone/line-out port. On Ubuntu, the system interprets this port as having two outputs—"line in" and "headphones"—with the main distinction being that "line out" typically bypasses the built-in amplifier, while headphones do use it. When updating PavuControl or changing the function to headphones, there’s no built-in method to lock this setting permanently. In short, it defaults to labeling "line in" as the active port when I need the other behavior. If you make a typo or have questions, feel free to ask and I’ll explain clearly.

If configurations get erased upon restart, attempt to preserve them by executing "sudo alsactl store"

Onboard amplifier handles headphone output through a physical port. When activated, it treats the connected device as two separate ports and sets the line-out status by default. This causes the volume to be very low, almost inaudible, which is why it feels like a whisper. The system is designed to detect the plugged-in source, but at 4 a.m., if you don’t respond, it can make you feel drowsy.
