I recently reinstalled Borderlands 2 on Steam for the first time on Linux (Mint 22.1). I had previously invested around 600 hours on the game on Windows and completed five of the six vault hunters. When I started the game, it launched without the launcher or splash screen. Upon loading to the main menu, I noticed the menu displayed no loaded vault hunters and lacked a continue game button—only a new game option appeared. It felt like I hadn’t played the game before, and all my cloud save files were missing. That changed when I checked Steam’s game info, which revealed the game was running natively on the Scout runtime. At that moment, I randomly decided to force the game to use Proton 9.0.4. After restarting, the launcher windows appeared, followed by the splash screen. Once it loaded to the main menu, I saw my main VH, the continue game option, and the ability to select all saved VHs. All unlocked areas were accessible, and my entire progress was intact.

TL;DR: After switching from Windows to Linux, ensure the game runs on Proton to retain your progress.

No noticeable slowdown occurs when using Proton instead of native execution.

I didn’t observe significant variations from Proton during the short session. The performance in the initial zones seemed similar.

Rely on the games. Typically performance drops on native platforms when using OpenGL rather than Vulkan.

Consider backing up your save files, as Steam may not always properly sync them across different operating system versions of the same game.
