I transferred my external hard drive to a friend who needed certain files, and it returned today. After connecting it to my computer, all the folders were renamed to .scr and became inaccessible. I tried scanning it with Avast, but the repair option appeared after detection. When a virus was found, it displayed a write error. Please assist me. My important files are stored on this drive.

No, I didn't. Let me know if you need anything else.

You're confused, right? Folders aren't files—they're containers without an extension.

If you see the folder icon matching the XP design, you'll also see that they appear as files. It seems the drive is filled mostly with viruses now.

Notice how it appears. Windows indicates it's a screensaver or similar format

You might consider using a disk recovery tool.

I don't believe those files will be retrievable. Excuse me. You might want to convert it to a .zip file, though I'm not entirely confident it will succeed.
