Alienware R16 CPU Throttling
Alienware R16 CPU Throttling
Hey there, I heard you're planning to build a PC but stumbled upon a good deal on a nearly-new Alienware unit (RTX 4080, i9-14900F). It's running pretty well most of the time, but your CPU seems to be throttling its speed. After heavy use, it drops below 3.3Mhz quickly. I ran some tests and think this is likely intentional throttling from the motherboard or power management. Since you can't adjust voltage in BIOS and haven't succeeded with tuning tools, it might be a deliberate power-saving feature. Could there be a way to bypass this? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance.
The CPU cooler from Dell isn't sufficient for this machine. Would you like to see a photo? Please note that if you still wish to return it, you can do so. A quick search on Google indicates this machine is problematic. If you choose to keep it, think about upgrading the CPU cooler.
Intel eliminated voltage control features from non-K CPUs. The 14900F only supports 65W power consumption. Many brands set this limit during extended stress tests. It’s possible Dell follows suit. https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...0-ghz.html Exit XTU and capture screenshots of ThrottleStop, including FIVR and TPL windows to view unlocked settings. Enable Log File mode and run a game for 15 minutes. After testing, upload the log file to your next post. It will appear in ThrottleStop/Logs with today’s date. If forced to use limited turbo power, the best cooler won’t help much.
Search results indicate strong performance. If the device is rated for 65W, the 240Aekto Aio should handle it without problems. However, user feedback suggests otherwise. Consider installing HWinfo64, Cinebench R23 or 24, and run a short test while the software is active in sensors-only mode (verify at startup). While it operates, observe CPU usage and power limits.
I see this is an older thread but I just came across the same issue. I have the R16 with the 14900f and the same power throttling under full cpu stress test (cpu-z) I never get above 60c. Called dell support and they basically said this is how it is supposed to work. they pointed at the fact that at idle it was sitting at 5.5ghz and everything is working correctly. :edit: almost forgot to mention power draw was at 100w for the processor under stress especially if only using P-cores on the plus side the machine is super quiet and stays super cool like I said never going above 60c when gaming... I will probably have to sell this and just build my own...
Share some ThrottleStop images with the TPL and FIVR interfaces. This tool could help raise turbo limits, boosting performance. You have plenty of cooling capacity. A solid base to start from. If your processor overheats, lower the turbo settings to match your cooling system's limits.
