Recently I switched to an R9 5900X from my previous R7 3700X. The ROG Strix LC280 AIO makes a loud noise when the PC starts, but it quiets down after a short while. When idle, temperatures sit between 35-40°C; during gaming they reach 45°C–70°C (at least 65°C–70°C for GTA5). CineBench shows a peak of 75°C. Is this typical for powerful CPUs like the 5900X? And are these temperatures within normal ranges?

You're probably hearing the fans running at full speed until the motherboard is ready and the BIOS fan curves are set. It's not a cause for concern unless you don't notice the fans, which could indicate an issue. Regarding temperatures, I'm using a 5950x on an NH-D15 air cooler and see comparable readings on my system. These values aren't unusually high considering the strength of both processors.

It's not a cause for concern unless you don't notice the fans, which could indicate an issue. It's just the fans spinning before the BIOS takes over and sets fan curves. Normal temperatures are fine unless you start noticing them rise toward 90°C. Is that 2400MHz RAM? Be sure to use your XMP or DOCP settings so they operate at the advertised speed.

The fans behave normally, but the 5900X handles idle well despite being a powerful machine. It’s running a bit warm during idle, which is typical for its performance. Did you configure your RAM to run flat at 17s? With Auto Mine it’s set to 15s. The 5900X is quite capable, and my setup is similar. However, when I connect my 5600X, the fans barely make a sound because the CPU generates very little heat compared to it.

Old boards tend to run around 50% fan speed at startup, regardless of whether it's a C2D or a hexacore Westmere Xeon.
