After updating the BIOS, the Ryzen 5800X slows down to under 1GHz.
I’m working on an X570 Strix E-gaming rig with a 5800x and 6800xt. The BIOS has stayed the same since I got it in December 2020. My MOBO has been stable on these chips since, but after switching from the 3070 to the 6800xt, I’ve noticed occasional crashes that aren’t related to the power supply unit. I thought updating the BIOS would help. After doing so, I reverted to the original settings—auto mode, PBO enabled, power limit increased, DOCP on—and things got worse. Performance dropped sharply during Cinebench tests; even with Adrenaline software running, the CPU spiked between 400MHz and 1.7GHz while all cores were active. Now it stalls at 3.9–4.0GHz and drops to around 1GHz, cutting my frame rate by about half. I’m trying to close Ryzen Master to see if that helps, but it’s still unresponsive. The BIOS limits haven’t changed, and the cores are mostly sleeping with only a couple at full speed. This is strange—apps and windows should be running normally but with very low performance. I’m not sure what to do next; I’m considering removing Ryzen Master, though I worry it might break Adrenaline. No updates to Win 11 either. Anyone have seen similar issues?
Brother, the issue isn't the GPU but the Nvidia drivers. I think they're still installed, which I was just too lazy to uninstall despite wanting better performance. Forums suggest it's usually not needed anymore. I'm seeing a big jump in frame rate—80 to 100 fps compared to what I got with the 3070—and I'm really happy with how it runs. I plan to sell the 3070 in another build using an Intel setup for a fair price. The 3070 was a poor-performing model that came prebuilt, and the Red Dragon 6800xt is a much better upgrade. I didn't use ray tracing either, as it hurt performance and didn't improve things much on the 3070 either. This seems to be a BIOS update problem or an issue with the CPU/Intel master.
Yeah that's not the GPU... Multiple BIOSes on the board and a way to switch between them? Any way to downgrade the BIOS? Try un/reinstalling the Radeon software (and NVIDIA drivers since you don't need them anyway)
I'm not claiming that. You wouldn't find yourself here without updating the bios because of the GPU problem.
It varies with the workload. In the game I play most (MW19, probably optimized for AMD since it's a popular console title using RDNA/RDNA2 GPUs), at 1440p with all settings maxed out (except RT, which I disabled) I achieved around 150-180fps on the 3070 and up to 250-280fps with the 6800XT. I’m not sure why I’d set it that high—I don’t follow any company too much. This time I built an AMD version and didn’t run into many problems until the BIOS update.
Adrenaline has any updates you should be aware of? What occurs when you disable PBO? Are factory clocks provided? For clarity, what are your CPU temperatures currently? You notice at 1440p/1080p the 6800xt surpasses the 3080 in performance? At 4k it would be a minor difference. There are instances where the 6800xt edges out the 3090 in 4k. In rare scenarios, it offers a performance boost and an upgrade. Have you upgraded to a beta BIOS or the latest stable release? If it's still beta, they might have made changes affecting how Adrenaline and PBO interact with the CPU.
The system shows a BIOS flashback issue, yet I’m checking for any simple software problems that might be resolved first. My suspicion is it’s likely the Ryzen Master setting, as I re-enabled it and it dropped below 1GHz again (refer to the photos I just uploaded). Even without it active, performance hasn’t reached the expected 4.0–4.1 range, whereas it should have climbed to 4.8–4.9 after the BIOS update. I might start by removing Ryzen Master to see if that improves things, just in case someone else has faced a similar issue. This seems like a software bug, possibly on AMD or ASUS hardware here.
Adrenaline has been refreshed to the most recent release. It was updated just yesterday. The CPU runs a Lian Li Gallahad 360 and maintains excellent temperatures. During peak performance (reaching 4.7 in-game), it would register around 60-70°C, rarely surpassing 80°C even during extended stress tests on this AIO. This suggests the issue isn’t temperature, but rather GPU heat spikes—typically hitting 90°C at the junction, which is normal for a 300W AMD card. The BIOS version is up-to-date; however, I’ve read that on ASUS boards it’s wise to upgrade incrementally. If I had the late 2020 BIOS, I’d have upgraded to 2021 v1 first, then 2021 v2 (assuming two updates per year), before moving to early 2022. Given the cost of this mid-range board (around $550 a few years ago), I assumed it would adapt smoothly to the newer BIOS. Maybe I was mistaken. I’ll disable PBO and test—note that while idle with Ryzen Master disabled, it rebooted cleanly without errors. By the way, when it restarted after the reboot, AMD automatically reset everything, Ryzen Master is off now. I haven’t changed the BIOS yet, so PBO should still be active, but it’s only boosting to 4.2 across all cores—matches the stock speed. So PBO isn’t functioning as expected?
