I bought several X870E MB units from Gigabyte. For a few, I installed 4x48GB of DDR5 memory while the others had 2x48GB. All CPUs were AMD 9900X. I anticipated that handling four modules would be tough and wouldn't run at full speed. For two modules it worked fine, but with four it became more demanding. I bought both 4x48GB sets from Corsair and GSKill at 5200MT/s. When using four modules, the GSKill RAM peaked at 5000MT/s on one machine and 4600MT/s on another (it handled 5200MT/s with just two modules). The other PCs were similar, so I thought the issue might be related to the memory controller or the modules themselves. With four modules, Corsair RAM reached its advertised speed of 5200MT/s, which was good. However, after updating the BIOS/UEFI, the GSKill RAM dropped to a maximum of 4600MT/s (a significant drop). I hoped BIOS updates would improve stability and performance, not reduce it. I contacted Gigabyte for clarification but expected no support since my modules aren’t listed as supported. Should I be surprised by this? Is this typical? Usually people see better results after BIOS upgrades, not worse. Thanks for your thoughts. Best, -a-
I tried, but the changes seem minimal whether enabled or disabled (I control the RAM frequency manually). The standard DDR5 rate (XMP/Expo OFF) is 4800MT/s. The Corsair RAM can't reach that speed anymore (GSkill was already low before the BIOS update, at least on one system).
