After installing a new GPU, system locks can occur.
Hello everyone, I recently upgraded to an RX 6950xt three weeks ago. I also needed a new power supply since the previous one wasn’t sufficient for the new GPU. So far, games run smoothly without any performance drops. During a Zoom call for university, my PC froze and only closed Chrome resolved it. Since then, opening any browser locks the system, requiring Alt+F4 or Ctrl+Alt Delete to stop it. It seems web browsers are the culprits, but I still need a browser open for work. I’ve tried various fixes: using DDU, removing old drivers, reseating RAM and GPU, reinstalling Windows, running virus scans with multiple antivirus, switching browsers (Edge, Chrome, OperaGX, Firefox), disabling hardware acceleration in browsers, checking RAM with memory diagnostics, and using a hardware monitor. No spikes were seen on the task manager, though CPU usage spiked when moving browser windows. After a clean Windows install, I can’t even access Edge’s settings to disable hardware acceleration—so I’m writing this from my phone now. My only option left is to return the card for repair, but I’m unsure if it’s the GPU or something else. Here are my specs: XFX Merc 6950xt, 5600X, Corsair RM850e PSU, Viper 16GB DDR4 RAM, Asus ROG B550 motherboard. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’ve exhausted all my ideas so far.
It seems you've already explored several troubleshooting steps. Trying a Linux distribution like Ubuntu on a Live USB can help confirm if the issue is software-related or hardware-based. If it works, you likely have a hardware problem; otherwise, check for driver issues or resource constraints.
The current video would be enough to evaluate it, no installation needed.
I installed Ubuntu and tested various browsers, even forcing the problem by launching nearly all apps with 20 open tabs. No issues arose. It seems Windows might be the cause, yet a fresh install didn’t resolve it.
typically the issue lies with the drivers. Try checking for previous versions of the ones you're using to see if performance improves.
