I found that the secure boot feature wasn’t functioning properly on my Gigabyte X570 Mobo and attempted to resolve the problem. Once it worked, I followed all the necessary steps to ensure the system recognized it correctly. Initially, the BIOS settings didn’t have active secure boot enabled. After resetting the BIOS configuration and re-enabling it, Windows acknowledged that secure boot was active in the system information. There were no major issues until I rebooted after saving the changes and logging into Windows. Inside Windows, the computer ran extremely slow during the first 5-10 minutes due to high disk usage—Task Manager showed 100% utilization on the performance tab, while the process tab reported only 50%. The issue was linked to my Samsung 860 QVO 2TB SSD, which Crystal Disk reported no problems with and was functioning normally. After the disk load spiked, performance improved significantly. If anyone has suggestions or advice, I’d appreciate it.
EDIT: It turns out BitLocker was causing the problem when secure boot was activated. The Gigabyte board is now a source of frustration and I wouldn’t recommend them anymore.
Likely disk encryption or BitLocker is handling things quietly in the background.
I hadn't considered this before. I'll experiment with the BitLocker configurations to check. Since I didn't realize the secure boot wasn't functioning properly, it seems BitLocker might not have been set up correctly. I really dislike this motherboard and look forward to replacing it when possible.
Actually I had bitlocker on but it never seemed to work and I never identified why because at some point I forgot about fixing it after a few reinstalls of windows. I tend to have bitlocker and stuff turned on after working in a job where I was rebuilding hospital computers for when they were upgrading to win 10. So I tend to just always turn on all the security features from habits from that time. I just honestly had never experienced a slow down like this from bitlocker on my laptop or work devices. I am still waiting for it to fully turn off to see if it was the culprit.
Device Encryption activates by default when using an MS account with SB enabled. If not, locate Device Encryption in the Start Menu and verify its status.
Only a setup function applies to new installations. Once all required actions are completed after creating an account on a fresh installation, encryption will start automatically. This does not occur during an existing installation.
I've seen this a couple of times before, and it can occur even after setup.
