I thought the 10600k would work better because it has six cores, which is more than the 8 cores in the 9700k. I wondered if the 9700k would be preferable since it provides more cores for gaming or a server at the same cost.

The focus was on single-core results. They're about the same number of cores, almost unchanged since Skylake. At that speed, single-core performance would look almost the same. A difference between 9.7GHz and 10.6GHz isn't noticeable unless software uses hyperthreading. The higher frequency model offers better cooling efficiency.
