Affordable motherboard featuring Thunderbolt PCIe card compatibility.
Searching for an affordable Intel 9th-gen board that works with Thunderbolt PCIe cards for your LG 5K display.
Instead of DisplayPort, Thunderbolt offers more flexibility—your PC could act as a hub, and you wouldn’t need a dedicated display. Most Thunderbolt expansion cards fall short of supporting full USB Power Delivery.
Thanks for your message! You’re using the lg ultra fine 5k display for Mac, which you’ve owned for about two years and still enjoy. The main issue is that you need a PC around once a week and don’t want more than four displays on your desk. You’re okay with the Windows version having around 4.5k resolution.
In that scenario... Here are all the motherboards compatible with Intel 9th generation and featuring a Thunderbolt header, allowing you to install a Thunderbolt 3 add-in card. You can browse the options on the provided link and choose the features that suit you. Alternatively, consider purchasing a board that already includes a Thunderbolt 3 port, such as the Gigabyte Z390 Designare. Personally, I opt for the AsRock Phantom Gaming 4, paired with an AsRock TB3 AIC v2 card for AMD Ryzen systems. It performs excellently. On the Intel side, the recommended board is: https://skinflint.co.uk/asrock-z390-phan...ml?hloc=uk And here the AIC: https://skinflint.co.uk/asrock-thunderbo...88596.html
Thanks for the feedback. Just confirming the details: the specs mention 2 PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, with PCIe 2.0 at one slot and PCIe 4.0 at the other. My GPU should go in the first PCIe 2.0 slot, while the TB card fits in the second PCIe 4.0 slot. No issues expected. Also, clarifying what PCIe 2.0 and PCIe 4.0 mean. Appreciate your help!
Uncertain about the source of that information. The first slot needs to operate in x16 while the second in x4. Unfortunately, x4 is the lowest performance you'll get from that PCI-e Thunderbolt card, resulting in 36Gbit/s versus the 40Gbit/s Thunderbolt 3.
The Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro features a ThunderBolt 3 connector—ideal for an AMD build.
