I’m searching for a more recent NAS board with at least four SATA ports, preferably under $50. Since my current setup is limited by outdated drivers, I need a board that supports full SATA integration without extra expansion cards. I prefer a model with an integrated CPU and heatsink, as those features are already sufficient for my needs. The AsRock J5040-ITX looks promising—it matches the requirements and is only five years old. Other options like the J4355-ITX or H811 Plus also offer four SATA ports but would require additional components. I’m open to other budget-friendly choices if this one doesn’t fit perfectly.

Have you checked pcpartpicker.com? It lets you select your CPU and displays matching motherboards. After that, you can explore listings from various sellers.

You can easily get any device with an M.2 port by purchasing an adapter, allowing you to upgrade or upgrade your setup and choose durable options like a high-quality N100 iX board for long-term use.

A product from "Estink" with a 1-star rating, not fitting your motherboard's needs.

Usually I handle this, but when purchasing a motherboard focused on SATA instead of the CPU, it becomes difficult.

The CPU checks for suitable motherboards. After choosing one, adjust the SATA port count to your preference. This setting is located on the left side of the page.

There are numerous choices available. Most rely on controllers found in standard SATA add-in cards. Regarding the adapter, you can apply it to any new board with a M.2 port, allowing flexibility in selection. I've been using this generic setup for about a year and a half in a compact NAS. It's performing well, using the same controller as my old Startech card from around 2008 that they still produce today.

It’s tough to find it at low prices. MATX usually offers comparable performance but at half the cost and with significantly more storage options. My AM4 board was about $80 and came with six SATA ASRock Pro4 B450M drives. It performed well with a 5600G drive. As mentioned, M.2 adapters for SATA are available. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=m.2+to+sata Also, think about using Linux if you’re building a NAS—TrueNAS works nicely and could help you get more out of your existing setup.

And regarding the M.2 concept, remember you can't boot from these as any other SATA controller port; you'll need a dedicated SATA or M.2 slot on the board. Otherwise, I'd also check out Intel's N100, N105, N200, and N300 boards for similar options. There are many router and thin client boards available on AliExpress, Amazon, etc., featuring multiple SATA ports from well-known brands.

You checked your motherboard and found the integrated chip, but you can't just swap it out. You'll also need a compatible CPU and it supports DDR3 memory. That means you'd have to build a completely new system.
