You're considering moving away from a basic Netgear router to a more custom setup using pfSense or OpenWRT. That's a solid move for better control and performance. For WAPs, look for models that support Wi-Fi 6 and dual-band operation. Check reviews on platforms like eBay for affordable options, but verify compatibility with your existing network. If unsure about plug-and-play functionality, consider using a system like Unifi to simplify integration. Test a few units before committing to ensure they meet your power requirements and work seamlessly with your current setup.

Searching online for "[model name] flash openWRT" usually helps confirm compatibility fast.

Wait, I thought everything had to be configured with Unifi software as a set, but maybe I was mistaken. I was hoping these APs would run without much management, just switch them on and use them.

It doesn't make sense, things should just function properly. After checking more, I think the Unifi 6 lite might be a good option since you can find it cheaply on eBay. You only need two, and your house is small enough.

Only the access points are available as Unifi hardware. You must install the Unifi software on a PC to use them, then set up the devices. After configuration, they’re ready to operate without needing the PC or software to run continuously.

U7 lite from Ubiquiti with a POE injector is my top suggestion. Simply install the app on your phone to configure the access points—about five minutes of work. No router required, but it simplifies management.
